Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup canola oil or vegetable/olive oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs room temperature
  • 3 tsp orange extract
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • ½ cup water

Garnish (Optional)

  • candied oranges
  • chocolate shavings
  • orange zest

Instructions

  • Sift flour into a large bowl. Add the cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Combine well.
  • In a second bowl, add the eggs, buttermilk, orange extract, orange juice, and water. Whisk to combine.
  • Add the flour mix to the egg mixture. Beat well.
  • Pour the batter into each cake pan evenly.
  • Bake for 25 minutes. Use a toothpick to test for doneness.
  • When done, remove cakes from oven. Leave to cool for 10 minutes.
  • Use frosting to coat the cake. Top with candied orange slices, chocolate shavings, or topping of your choice.
